Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1993, Ciarán Hickey is an award-winning director and writer who works so hard he seemingly never has time to stop for a nice picture to use on his website.
Raised on old monster and sci-fi films, he progressed from putting voices over video game characters on Youtube in his youth to studying for four years at The National Film School, IADT in 2011. He successfully graduated in 2015 with a First-Class Honors Degree in Film & Television Production, majoring in the areas of Drama Direction and Production. During his time at college he directed several short films and plays, with his studies culminating in the award-winning The Boy Murder (2015) which garnered him top prize within the Student Work category of the first inaugural ICAD & CPI Young Director’s Awards in Dublin, 2016.
A year before, a Moneysupermarket spec commercial he directed for the Nahemi-Kodak Student Commercial Awards received top prize within its category and was singled out by judge and esteemed filmmaker Alan Parker on the night of the awards ceremony in London.
Since 2016, Ciarán has worked primarily freelance as a Production Assistant within the Irish commercials industry on various high-profile brands alongside a variety of experienced Directors and Producers. In early 2017, he returned to directing with a bang after his fantasy short film The Lighthouse was selected for funding through the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown First Frames Creative Short Film Scheme – a joint venture between the National Film School IADT, Filmbase Dublin, and the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. The film was produced by Bjorn Mac Giolla of Bear Print Films and saw completion in January 2018. It is now set to begin its festival run.
In mid-2017 he also directed and produced another short film, a drama piece entitled Just Fine, from a script he co-wrote. The film is expected to complete and begin its festival run late-2018.
At present, Ciarán is busy at work on a variety of new projects including short films, spec commercials, an online sketch series, as well as planning for his first feature film.
